SCREENS
Mechanical or
non-mechanical screening is normally used as a preliminary
treatment prior to other processes. However, depending on the
type of wastewater and the constraints for discharge, screening
maybe all that is required. Screening is used for the separation
of gross solids, which may cause blockages in pumps or pipelines
and to reduce the solids impact on further treatment processes.
Most wastewater emanating from food production would be screened
down to 1mm, wastewater being discharged from a laundry would be
screened down to 0.25mm for the separation of cotton fines.
The screen would be sized to compliment the capacity of the feed
pumps. Screenings being discharged from the screen are normally
gravity fed into a suitable receptacle prior to disposal off
site. Depending on the origin of the screenings, they maybe
unpleasant and give rise to odours and should be disposed of as
soon as possible. Also, it may be necessary to cover in the
screenings receptacle to prevent vermin or birds being attracted
to the waste. Screens can be enclosed to offer protection from
adverse weather conditions and can also be fitted with hot or
cold-water backwash sprays.
